Altar Serving

Altar servers assist the priest at Mass by carrying the cross and candles in the procession, handling the vessels used for the Eucharist, and holding the ceremonial books. Experienced servers will eventually be trained to help with incense. Servers must be a minimum of 8 years old and have received First Communion. There is no maximum age limit. Fr. Dwyer makes sure that an experienced server is paired with a new one for his first few Masses. Training is done through an appointment with Fr. Dwyer (edwyer@diosag.org). For children under 18, a parent or guardian must be present for the training. Servers serve when they can, and are asked to arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of Mass. Occasionally, they will be asked in advance to serve for certain events (i.e., Christmas, Holy Week, Easter).
